Non Alcoholic New York Sour Mocktail

New York Sour Mocktail

by Rome Velasco •

A traditional New York Sour cocktail consists of rye whiskey or bourbon, red wine, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and for those unafraid to add a bit of silky panache, egg white. It's a certified classic, beloved for its sense of simplicity that amazingly doesn't sacrifice the elements that make for a layered, complex cocktail. But what if you're skipping the booze for whatever reason? Well, with the right ingredients, a non alcoholic version of the New York Sour can actually be as delicious as its boozy original.

The recipe calls for whiskey as the base, which we'll swap out for the excellent Lyre's Highland Malt, a whiskey alternative that's impossibly crafted to replicate the essence of a blended malt whiskey with none of the aftermath. For the float of red wine, you ought to choose a non alcoholic alternative that tastes like the real thing to nail the exact New York Sour flavor profile. Thankfully there's our very own No & Low Cabernet Sauvignon—a Chilean 2021 Vintage non alcoholic red wine. Not only does it fit perfectly into this classic cocktail, you can also enjoy it as you would a typical red. Feel free to crave without consequence!

Besides those two main ingredients, there's also the simple syrup and freshly squeezed lemon juice, which add a touch of sugar-and-citrus combo kick, resulting in a well-balanced drink. If you're up for using eggs in your drinks, you can thrown in an egg white, which will add silkiness. If eggs are a no-go, worry not. Skip it and opt for aquafaba instead (which is chickpea water).

The resulting sip is a tart, perfectly sweet, and richly layered (not to mention visually gorgeous and Instagrammable) classic drink, made non alcoholic for your booze-free pleasure. Find everything you need to make it below!

New York Sour Mocktail ingredients you'll need:

  • 2 oz Lyre’s Highland Malt
  • 1/2 oz No & Low Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1 egg white — this is merely optional, though. Again, if you can't have eggs for whatever reason, swap it out for aquafaba, which is chickpea water.

How do you make the best New York Sour Mocktail?

Non alcoholic New York Sour cocktail recipe

Making a non alcoholic New York Sour is fairly straightforward, just follow the steps below.

  1. Pour your Lyre's Highland Malt, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white (or aquafaba) into a shaker with a large chunk of ice, then shake thoroughly until everything's well-chilled.
  2. Strain your mix over a rocks glass filled with ice.
  3. Float the No & Low Cabernet Sauvignon red wine — that is, pour it ever so gently on the back of a spoon. It should float on top of your drink, making for a gorgeous ombre of red up top and a gorgeous lemony yellow all the way to the bottom.
  4. Enjoy your non alcoholic New York Sour! Cheers!

We highly recommend Lyre's Highland Malt! It's a stunning scotch whiskey replica featuring notes of cedar, grain, almonds and vanilla on the nose and deep flavors of toffee, spiced oak, and nutty grains in the palate department.
