Seedlip Spice 94. Reviewing non-alcoholic spirit and drinks.

What is Seedlip?

The world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit. A brand from the UK that deserves credit for fueling the alcohol free sector and pushing the sober-curious movement. The idea hit founder Ben Branson when he was served a sugary and unimpressive mocktail at a local restaurant. This moment, combined with a rich family history in farming and a really old book, inspired him to create a high quality non-alc option that could hold its own against any other bottle behind the bar. Read more about Seedlip’s story & history here.

There are three expressions of Seedlip: Garden 108, Grove 42, & the one we’ll be covering here, Spice 94.

What’s in it?

Seedlip Spice 94 is made from dried allspice berries, cardamom, white oak, bark from cascarilla, grapefruit peel, and lemon peel. There are no calories, no sugar, no sweeteners, and of course no alcohol in Seedlip.

Tasting Notes

Not made to drink on its own but we know everyone will be curious. We’ll get you mentally prepared for what to expect when drinking it on its own. Just remember to avoid making conclusions until you’ve had a cocktail, that’s where Seedlip steals the show.

The moment you open this bottle the room is filled with wonderfully intense aromas. It’s aromatically potent. Lots of allspice scents like cinnamon, clove, nutmeg along with cardamom. It also smells floral with hints of citrus from the grapefruit and lemon. Other notes we detected were woody, eucalyptus, jasmine, and cola.

When tasting it neat, its light and doesn’t contain much texture or body. You do feel the tannins though. A bit bitter and medicinal, which we find pleasant. Bone dry with focus on cardamom and clove. The citrus notes are stronger in the mouth than on the nose. A surprisingly long finish for a non-alc spirit.

A lot of the critical reviews you see across the internet come after this point. We think its quiet harsh and unjustified. Make a fair judgement once you’ve used it for its real application, making cocktails.

Non-alcoholic Drink Recipes

Spice & Tonic
50ml of Seedlip Spice
125ml of tonic water
Pour over ice & give it a swirl
Garnish with grapefruit peel

This is the reason people compare Seedlip to a gin. The profile of this drink is very similar to a gin & tonic, maybe that’s the reason we love it so much? The ratios are important here, the tonic really carries the flavour and bouquet of Seedlip but you don’t want to overdo it by adding too much tonic water. Use a quality tonic like Fever Tree. Grapefruit peel makes a big impact, trust us and don’t forget to add it. This drink made us believers.

Spiced Mule

50ml of Seedlip Spice

100ml of ginger beer

25ml of fresh lime juice

Pour over ice & gently mix
Garnish with lime & mint leaves

This is an easy way to fool someone. It’s hard to tell that this drink contains no alcohol. That could be because the ginger beer is so strong and distinct. The Seedlip Spice still makes an appearance on the nose and taste, but to a lighter extent then with the tonic. If the Moscow Mule was your go-to drink this is an easy way to cut back and drink less alcohol without sacrificing anything except a hangover.

Hedge your Bets

50ml of Seedlip Spice

30ml of grapefruit juice

15ml of lemon juice

Tablespoon of strawberry jam

Shake with ice, pour & strain into glass
Garnish with basil

This last drink is more sophisticated and requires a shaker & strainer. Lots of summer vibes here. Seedlip brings all these ingredients together for a balanced, bittersweet, and refreshing cocktail. The jam is interchangeable, we also made it with mango pepper jam and it was delicious. Perfect for quarantine season stuck in your backyard patio or by the pool. Jokes aside, we hope you’re all healthy and can enjoy this one with your friends and family by the time you read this.

Final Thoughts

We rate this highly and its a great starting point for the sober curious. The quality of restaurants and people associated with this spirit alone speak for itself. Yes, the price is high but for us its worth it. Especially when considering that every botanical or ingredient is individually macerated, distilled, filtered and then carefully blended to make non-alc concoctions that are changing the way we drink forever. We hope you decide to give it a try and share your thoughts. Don’t be afraid to get creative, this liquid can be used in a plethora of cocktails. Check out Seedlip’s website for more recipes.
